How often should you have a facial?

How often should you have a facial?

Every four to six weeks is the honest answer for most skin. Here is where that number comes from, and the three situations that change it.

Why four to six weeks

Skin renews itself on roughly a 28-day cycle in your twenties, slowing to 40 days or more later on. A facial clears the surface layer of dead cells and empties congested pores. Do it again a week later and there is not much waiting to be cleared. Leave it three months and you have spent two of them with the same dullness you booked to fix.

Four to six weeks lands where the treatment meets the skin's own timing.

When to come more often

  • Active congestion. If you are working through blackheads or persistent breakouts, every two to three weeks for the first two months clears the backlog faster.
  • Before an event. Book three to five days ahead, not the day before. Skin looks its best once any temporary pinkness has settled.
  • Charleston in summer. Heat and humidity are not kind to congested skin. Some people move to every three weeks from June to September and back afterwards.

When to come less often

Dry, thin or reactive skin does not need the same frequency. Every six to eight weeks is plenty, and the gaps matter as much as the treatments — the barrier needs time to rebuild.

The one that works differently

Anything aimed at firmness is on a different clock. Collagen is slow, and a single visit will not change it. Those treatments work as a course — a run of appointments spaced closely at the start, then maintenance — because you are asking cells to build structural protein rather than asking a surface to be cleaned.

The honest test: if your skin still looks good three weeks after your last appointment, you do not need to be back yet.

What actually maintains the result

A facial does not replace a routine. Cleansing properly at night, a hydrating serum, and daily SPF will do more for your skin over a year than any treatment schedule. The facial accelerates what your routine is already doing — it does not substitute for it.
